12 Kohlrabi Recipes

Kohlrabi can be eaten raw, grilled, sautéed or roasted. Give some of these kohlrabi recipes a try.

We had a whole family of moose ransack our garden just as August was coming to a close. A mother and her two calves. They ate every brassica in sight. They ate the romanesco, which we were trying for the first time. They ate the brussels sprouts. They ate the beautiful purple graffiti cauliflower that I had been plotting all summer to sneak into Kris’ dinners. They even came back the next night and finished off the cabbages and kale. The only thing they didn’t eat was the kohlrabi.

Those moose don’t know what they’re missing.

I could plant a whole garden of kohlrabi. It’s super-versatile, and it grows so effortlessly in our Alaskan garden. I’ve written before about my unquenchable hunger for kohlrabi, but it bears repeating and I will probably write about it again, too. That’s how much I love it.

Needless to say, I have been scouring cookbooks and food blogs for recipes. Here are some that just needed to be shared.

Yotam Ottolenghi’s Mixed Grill with Parsley Pesto

This was one of the first ways we ever ate kohlrabi, from my favorite cookbook of all time, Yotam Ottolenghi’s Plenty. It’s lovely grilled, and this parsley pesto gives it that decadent, summery twist. Also, my man Yotam knows how to do kohlrabi all sorts of fun and interesting ways: like fried, and in kimchi.

Kohlrabi Fritters with Avocado Cream Sauce

Photo from A Couple Cooks

This recipe by A Couple Cooks highlights purple kohlrabi, but white would do just as well. These fritters are crispy fried goodness with just the right amount of tangy, creamy goodness from the avocado.

Mashed Kohlrabi with Cauliflower

My husband is already groaning at the mention of anything mashed, or of cauliflower. But if I call this recipe from The Lemon Bowl “creamy kohlrabi,”  we might be able to work something out.

Fresh Mozzarella and Roasted Kohlrabi Crostini with Lemon and Shallots

This has all the things. Roasted kohlrabi. Fresh mozzarella. Herbs. Fried lemons and shallots. Kalamata olives. And finally, crispy little bread disks perfect for transporting that goodness right into my mouth.

Kohlrabi Chips with Hippie Ranch Dip

I know what you’re thinking: What if I’m not a hippie like you, you big hippie. Well, yes, I am a big hippie, but also it’s roasted kohlrabi and chips!

Kohlrabi goes well in just about any slaw, but this spicy, zesty version has me dreaming of summer, backyard BBQs, and tacos!

Crispy Apple and Kohlrabi Salad

This is from one of my favorite food blogs: Cookie and Kate! It’s so simple, but the tart, sweet apples and the nutty kohlrabi are divine.

Even Martha Stewart is loving on the kohlrabi. And this recipe uses both the bulb and the greens. And the greens are yummy.

Kohlrabi Fries

Stop the presses: Whhhhhhaaaaaaaattttttt!? Don’t tell my husband or we will have only kohlrabi in our gardens for the rest of our lives. He will even be trying to grow it in the basement over the winter.

Spiced Goat Stuffed Kohlrabi

Ok, so I am vegetarian and will not be cooking the neighbor’s goats. But I bet this would also be good with mushrooms, lentils, or moose if you’re Alaskatarian.

Sholeh Maash – Persian Green Mung Bean and Kohlrabi Soup

I am very excited about this one. Mung beans and kohlrabi are a match made in heaven and the spices here are easy to find, but are also a mix that is unique.

Grilled Pizza with Kohlrabi Greens and Kalamata Olives

Finally, our own little recipe. You don’t have to grill the pizza, but you do need to try kohlrabi greens as a topping!

I’ve got plenty of Golden Delicious apples at the moment. I must try the apple and kohlrabi slaw before the deer start taking more than their fair share. THANKS for sharing these recipes, so we don’t have to Google them.

I went ahead and bought a kohlrabi at the Homer farmers market on your recommendation, since we didn’t grow any. Looking forward to using one or two of your recipes.
Sorry to hear about your moose damage. Come on over to Twin Spruce Farm in Ninilchik. We have brussels sprouts and kale to share. And duck eggs. Lots of those. email me for directions, I’d love to meet you guys.

Oh my gosh, hey neighbor! In the summers we get to Ninilchik pretty often because hubby’s parents have a cabin there. Will let you know next time we are around!
